Abstract

851,703. Dielectric heating. BURNDEPT Ltd. Jan. 14, 1957 [Oct. 13, 1955], No. 29200/55. Class 39(3). [Also in Group VIII] A method of discrete operation welding of thin layers of thermo-plastic synthetic resins comprises first heating the material to be welded by conduction to just below welding temperature and after a predetermined time supplying a predetermined quantity of high frequency energy to effect welding. Electrical resistances 17 preheat one or both of the electrodes 11 and 12. The electrodes are then closed by means of the arm 13 which operates a switch 22 to switch on a delay device 18. This allows the material to reach electrode temperature before switching on a source of high frequency energy 15 for a period which is determined by the timing device 16. The temperature of the electrodes can be controlled by any known device 19 having a sensitive element 23. A number of small unit products can be welded simultaneously (see Fig. 2 not shown) by providing elongated electrodes heated by a number of heating means.
