Abstract

851,607. Wall coverings; metallic sheeting. GOODMAN, E. Dec. 10, 1956 [Dec. 9, 1955], No. 37638/56. Classes 20(2) and 20(4) [Also in Group XV] A wall covering comprises pliable metallic sheeting 1 having an impressed pattern made in strips of indefinite length one edge of which is formed with a flat marginal portion 4 for fixing to the wall, the other edge being formed so that it can be laid over the flat portion 4 of a previously laid strip. The impressed pattern is modified to form recesses 7, Fig. 2, for the heads of fixing screws along the edge opposite to margin 4. The marginal portion 4 is fixed by nails or screws 5 and the other edge of a strip which is laid over it to prevent entry of condensed moisture is fixed by nails or screws 6. The impressed pattern as shown has squares separated by horizontal and vertical grooves 2 and 3, the ends of the latter enlarged opposite the marginal portions 4 to accommodate the fixing means 6. Thin profiled metal beading 8 is provided to cover the edge 4 where not covered by another strip, and fixed by screws 9. Synthetic plastic or metal beading (not shown) may be used to conceal the fastenings 6. The hollows in the beading 8 and behind the embossed squares of the strips 1 are filled with a soft thermal and accoustic insulating and water-resistant adhesive packing 10 so that the strips can be wound into rolls and the unexposed face flat for attachment purposes. The flat face may have directions or advertising matter printed thereon. The strip 1 is made preferably of aluminium, 0.3 millimetre thick and between 400 and 1,200 millimetres wide and is fed through an electrolytic treating bath to the embossing rollers and then to a paint spraying chamber, the paint preferably having a synthetic resin base, and finally to a drying oven. The finished strip may be cut into rolls of 10 to 100 metres length. Patterns can be produced on the strip either by passing the wet painted surface through patterned rubber rollers or using stencils at the spraying stage. The packing 10 may be of any material such as neoprene-base adhesive, bituminous coating, synthetic plastic, rubber or caoutchouc.
