Abstract

851,141. Grinding or polishing. PILKINGTON BROS. Ltd., and BREWIN, J. D. Nov. 20, 1958 [Dec. 16, 1957], No. 39113/57. Class 60. A rotary abrading tool 6 for use in apparatus for grinding, smoothing or polishing a bevel 10, Fig. 4, along the margin of a plate of glass 3 comprises a ring-like abrading surface 22 disposed at gradually varying radius from the centre of rotation 31 of the tool, the variation of radius being at least as great as half the width of the abrading surface. The variation of radius at a maximum is about equal to the width of the abrading surface. The ring-like abrading surface may be in the form of an ellipse, Fig. 8, mounted concentrically to the axis of rotation of the tool or a circular ring 22, Fig. 4, secured by bolts eccentrically to the axis of rotation of the tool or by bolts 23 concentrically to a disc 25 eccentrically mounted by bolts 26 to a shaft 14, the disc 25 being formed with a portion 32 serving as a counterweight. Weights 34 may be mounted on a stud 33 to effect accurate balance of the wheel. The variation in radius may be accomplished by mounting the rotating tool with an annular abrading surface on a rotating crank, the length of which is less than half the width of the abrading surface which may be of diamond dust. In apparatus for bevelling the edges of rectangular glass sheets 3, Fig. 1, the sheets are gripped between resilient pads 8, 9 of opposed conveyers 1, 2 vertically inclined to the desired angle of the bevel to be formed on the glass ; rollers 11 on rods 12 above the conveyers support the projecting portions of the sheets. During its passage between the conveyers, the margin of the sheet is operated on by grinding discs 5, the rotary tool 6 and polishing tools 7 being belt-driven from shafts 20 connected to individual motors separately adjustable. The grinding and polishing tools may be of conventional cup-shape or of the same form as the rotary tool; in the latter case the tool 6 may be of conventional cup-shape. More than one rotary tool may be incorporated in the apparatus. The tools may be operated in groups, the tools of each group having the same abrading power or consecutive tools may have progressively lower abrading power. Circular glass plates may be bevelled by being supported on a member constantly rotated so that the glass overlaps several tools.
