Abstract

851,041. Cathode-ray tubes. ELECTRIC & MUSICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Jan. 18, 1957 [Jan. 20, 1956], No. 1929/56. Class 39(1). In a discharge device, a target electrode includes a layer 6 of material exhibiting the property of bombardment induced conductivity and photo-electrically emissive conducting elements 7, which become charged by the induced conductivity in dependence on the intensity of bombarding electrons and which can be scanned by a light spot through a mesh electrode 8 which limits the equilibrium potential attained by elements 7 during scanning. In the television pick-up tube shown bombarding electrons from photo-cathode 2 are focused onto an electron-permeable, light opaque conducting film 5 of the target by a coil 12 surrounded by a high permeability mu-metal screen 12a. Electrons released from elements 7 by the scanning light spot from tube 10 are directed into an electron multiplier 13. In an alternative device for use in television standards conversion the photo-electric cathode is replaced by an electron gun producing an electron beam modulated by received signals and scanned over the target.
