Abstract

Moulding powders are made by melt blending a first synthetic linear polyamide with a second synthetic linear polyamide, the second polyamide having a melting point of between 5 DEG and 100 DEG C. higher than that of the first polyamide and being present in an amount of less than 10% of the total weight of polyamides, and thereafter cooling and disintegrating the blended product. The process of the invention may be effected by tumbling particles of the two polyamides and mixing the tumbled particles in a screw extruder. Specified lower melting polyamides are polycaproamide, poly-11-aminoundecanoic acid, polyhexamthyelene adipamide and polyhexamethylene sebacamide. Specified higher melting polyamides are polyhexamethylene adipamide, polyhexamethylene terephthalamide, interpolymers of hexamethylene diammonium adipate and hexamethylene diammonium terephthalate and poly-bis(p-amino-cyclohexyl) methane adipate. In the examples, polyamide mixtures are made from (1) polyhexamethylene adipamide and an interpolyamide made from hexamethylene diammonium adipate, (2) polyhexamethylene sebacamide and polyhexamethylene adipamide and (3) polycaproamide and polyhexamethylene adipamide, the lower melting point component being specified first in each example.
