Abstract

850,867. Recording apparatus. PIRELLI S.p.A. March 15, 1957 [March 16, 1956], No. 8691/57. Class 106 (4). [Also in Group XXXIV] A flat-band tyre building machine (see Group XXXIV) is automatically controlled during a sequence of tyre building operations by signals transmitted to the drives of the various parts of the machine by a sensing means operatively associated with a moving record of signals which correspond to the required movements of the machine parts, the record having been obtained either by theoretical consideration or from an actual manual control of the tyre building sequence. The control and recording device, Figs. 8-10, comprises two pairs of tape winding and storage drums 73, 74 and 80, 81 mounted in a housing 64, the drums 73 and 80 being driven for clockwise rotation by a common motor 65 through a clutch and free wheel 69, 70. Likewise, the drums 74 and 81 are driven counterclockwise from the motor 65 through a clutch 88 and free wheel 89. All the drums have an associated brake and the two pairs each have an associated toothed idler 76, 83 respectively over which the tapes 75 and 82 are guided with the idler teeth engaged in perforations in the tape. Adjacent each idler drum 76, 83 is a guide bar 95, 121 respectively for support members 93, 94 and 120 movable transversely of the run of the tapes 75, 82. The support member 93 is driven by a rotatable hollow screw-threaded shaft 99 which is coupled by a chain (not shown) and sprockets 102 (Fig. 7), 101 (Fig. 9) for rotation in unison with the motor driven shaft 46, and the support member 94 is driven by a screw-threaded shaft 107 extending through the shaft 99 and coupled for rotation by the motor 29 which moves the carriage 26. The support 120, which is associated with the tape 82, is driven by a screwthreaded shaft 124 which is coupled to the shaft 35 driven by the motor 37. Fig. 9 shows the supports 93, 94 and 120 each fitted with a stylus 97, 98 and 123 respectively for tracing on the associated moving tapes 75, 82 the paths L1-R1, Figs. 11 and 12, which correspond to the movements effected by the tyre bead stitching discs during a manually controlled tyre building sequence. Each path starts from a reference line I, II or III extending longitudinally of the tape and results from the movement of the stylus transversely of the moving tape by the associated support when the motor to which said support is coupled is operatively moving the stitching disc. When the particular motor is stopped at the end of a stitching step, the associated support also stops, and the stylus traces a line parallel to the reference line but displaced therefrom a distance representative of the amplitude of the movement of the stitching disc from its rest position. Return movements of the disc are recorded by sloping lines of opposite inclination to those recorded by the forward stitching movements, the slope of the lines being a measure of the speed of the stitching movement. In Figs. 11 and 12, the path L1<SP>1</SP>-R1<SP>1</SP> traced on tape 82 records the movements of the discs parallel to the building drum axis; the path L11<SP>1</SP>-R1<SP>11</SP> records on one side of the tape 75 the movements of the discs radially of the drum, and the path L1<SP>111</SP> R1<SP>111</SP> records on the other side the tape 75 (by means of the stylus 97), the rotational movements of the disc about their shafts 41. Such paths may be amended to correct defects in the manual control, or be replaced by theoretically correct traces. Additional short impulse traces may be recorded on the tapes by other styli to denote the initiation and termination of other operations such as the pressurizing of the disc cylinders 57, or the starting, stopping or changing of the speed of rotation of the building drum. To use the above mechanism for automatic control, the tapes are cut so that each of the paths L1-R1 form a profiled edge of the tape, Fig. 19, and the styli are replaced by feeler mechanisms, (see Group XXXIV).
