Abstract
756,972. Magnetic recording and reproducing apparatus. HARTLEY ELECTROMOTIVES, Ltd. Jan. 21, 1955 [Jan. 21, 1954], No. 1896/54. Class 40(2) In a recording and reproducing having means for stopping reproduction and the movement of the record, means are operable in conjunction with the stop means to record on the medium a recording representative of the point at which reproduction stopped, and means are also operable by start means to scan the said recording and cause the reproduction to begin again at the point where reproduction was stopped. The high enertias normally required to ensure constant speed in a record apparatus cause the record to overshoot the transducer when stopping and thereby lose that part of the recording, and when re-starting to fail to reproduce properly a further portion of the recording while the record medium is attaining the correct velocity. The present invention is designed to avoid these deficiencies by coupling the drive capstan 18 through a differential gear with a drum 16 two sets of four magnetic transducers 20A, 20B, 20C, 20D and 21A, 21B, 21C, 21D, respectively, one set of which is superposed over the other and correspond to two different tracks on the tape 13. The cage 24 of the differential gear is driven by a motor 23, and during reproduction a brake 28 holds drum 16 stationary while capstan 18 draws the tape 13 over the drum 16. The signals on the tape are reproduced by the leading transducer, corresponding to transducer 20A in Fig. 2. When the reproduction is stopped by means not shown the circuit of the transducer 20A is broken, the brake 28 released, a brake 29 applied, and a constant frequency control signal applied to transducer 21A. The position on the tape at which reproduction ceased overshoots the position of the transducers 20A, 21A before coming to a standstill, but as the drum started to rotate counterclockwise at the instant reproduction ceased, the correct relative speed between tape and drum is maintained. Furthermore, at the same position on the tape that reproduction ceased the control signal recording was commenced on the tape corresponding to that position. When the apparatus is again switched for reproduction, the brake 29 is released, the brake 28 applied, and the transducer 21 corresponding to transducer 21B in Fig. 2 is switched in and when it reaches the position in which the control signal starts, the transducer 20 corresponding to transducer 20B is switched, by means not shown, to reproduce. By the time the drum 16 becomes stationary, the transducer 20B has come to rest in the position of transducer 20A in Fig. 2. The apparatus has been designed largely for purposes in which frequent interruptions of short duration take place, and a particular application described is that in which an automatic typewriter receives data and pauses are required and automatically initiated at the end of each line for sufficient time to enable the carriage of the typewriter to be returned to initial position.
