Abstract

850,853. Earth boring drills. BASSINGER TOOL CO. June 9, 1958, No. 18321/58. Class 85..[Also in Group XXIII]. A pneumatically operable percussive rock drill comprises a hammer 10, a bit-carrying anvil 12, valve means 15, 16 for reciprocating the hammer in accordance with the movement thereof, through passages 45, 52 in said hammer and anvil which are adapted to be closed by members 44, 49 respectively and a slidable connection between the anvil and the casing permitting relative longitudinal movement between the member 49 and anvil to vary the frequency of the hammer strokes. The sliding connection comprises aligned splineways in the anvil and casing portions, bearing members 31 being disposed in said splineways. Each of the members 44, 49 may be provided with a sealing ring and the member 49 constitute a hollow stern, see Figs. 6 and 7 (not shown). The bit may be made integral with the anvil and the hammer may be made in two pieces. A check valve can be provided in the anvil passage, (see Figs. 9 and 10 not shown).
