Abstract
850,834. Permutation locks. CHUBB & SON Ltd. Nov. 14, 1958 [Nov. 27, 1957], No. 36995/57. Class 44. A permutation lock comprises a bolt 2 and bolt lever 4, a driver 10 operable by a spindle 9 and engageable by the bolt lever for the purpose of operating the bolt and control wheels 6 adapted when preset to unique angular positions to allow engagement of the bolt lever with the driver but in all other positions to prevent such engagement, wherein the driver is loosely mounted on supporting means 5 other than the spindle and the spindle is axially movable between one position where an abutment 13 thereon is firmly engaged with the driver and another position in which the abutment 13 is disengaged therefrom. As shown the supporting means 5 is a tubular post through which the spindle 9 projects and which carries the wheels 6. On the end of the spindle 9 is a disc 11 provided with the abutment 13 which when the groove is moved axially towards the driver by means of the spindle engages a peripheral slot 14 in the driver so that the driver can be rotated by the spindle. Each side of the slot 14 has inclined cam surfaces 15 so that if the disc 11 and driver are slightly out of alignment the axial movement of the disc 11 will cause the driver to rotate into alignment by engagement of the abutment 13 with one or other of the surfaces 15. The driver is provided with a recess 16 in which a hook of the lever 4 can engage for actuating the bolt and the disc 11 is provided with a slot 17 adapted to engage an abutment on the inner surface of the rear cover plate of the lock when the spindle 9 is pushed axially inwards, to prevent rotation of the spindle in that position. This abutment rides against the rear surface of the disc 11 while the spindle and disc are in their forward axial position to prevent inward axial movement of the spindle until the slot 17 becomes aligned with the abutment. The lever 4 is normally held out of engagement with the edges of the control wheels and driver by means of a snap action character as disclosed in Specifications 735,148, 748,360 or 815,654.
