Abstract
A stiffener is stuck to the upper of a shoe by resin applied either to the stiffener or upper in spaced blobs, and subsequently smoothed out by the pressure applied to the stiffener and upper to consolidate them. A hollow working head 1 is filled with resin under pressure and its lower face has openings 6 normally closed by spring urged valves 9. Plunger 17 is attached by means of bell-crank lever 31, 34 to the piston of an air cylinder. The lever is pivoted at 32 to a movable framework 25, 26, 24, 23 so that when the piston moves to the right, part 23 moves to the right until members 24 come up against stop 39. Attached to members 25 are a pair of bars 41 and a frame 44 which serve, when the members 25, 26, 24, 23 reach the limit of their movement, to hold down the work W by its edges. The plunger 17 is now vertically over the work W. On further movement of <PICT:0850823/III/1> <PICT:0850823/III/2> the piston to the right, bell-crank lever 31, 34 rocks about its pivot 32 and plunger 17 is depressed. When the tips of valves 9 come into contact with the work W, they are forced back against the springs 12 and resin can pass through apertures 6 to the work. Movement to the left of the piston causes the plunger to rise and valves 9 to close, and frame 44 subsequently to be withdrawn. A pressing pad for consolidating the united layers after the resin has been applied may be incorporated.
