Abstract

850,632. Magnetic recording apparatus. AUTOPHON A.G. June 23, 1958 [June 27, 1957], No. 20080/58. Addition to 824,469. Class 40 (2). [Also in Group XXXIX] In a transmitting arrangement of the type disclosed in the main patent, in which impulses are emitted by a magnetic reading head which scans information carriers bearing recordings of the required impulses, the reading head has at least two poles disposed in a plane at right angles to the direction of scanning. The recordings may be mechanical recordings or magnetic recordings. Embodiments using mechanical recordings.- These recordings consist of raised portions 7 on a drum 6 (Fig. 2), which raised portions are indicated by hatching in Fig. 1. Each of the two poles 4 of the reading head (Fig. 2) has a winding 3, and the magnetic circuit passes from each of the poles 4 via the information carrier to the permanent magnet 2. The raised portions 7 are so disposed that as the head scans from left to right (Fig. 1) they are either under both poles 4 simultaneously (neutral position), or under only one pole (extreme positions). The flux produced in the upper and lower poles is indicated at # o and # u , respectively, and the resulting output voltage from the reading head at S. The latter will be seen to consist of rectangular positive and negative impulses. Alternative forms of reading head having two auxiliary poles and one auxiliary pole are shown in Figs. 3 and 4, respectively. In the arrangement of Fig. 6 separate records are provided for scanning by each of the poles 4, the lower edge of area 13 and the upper edge of area 15 forming a pair of such records. Embodiment using magnetic recordings.-The two extreme positions of the mechanical recordings are replaced by portions of the drum magnetised in the two opposite directions (Fig. 7), and the neutral position by an absence of magnetisation. The reading head is much simpler, since it requires neither a permanent magnet nor auxiliary poles. Apparatus for pre-setting trains of impulses.- For each of the number of trains to be set up there is provided a drum 23 (Fig. 8), consisting of three discs, rotatable about the shaft 30 under control of a gear 25 and the toothed segment 26 connected to a setting lever 28. The levers 28 are set so that the raised portions on the drum corresponding to the impulse trains required are aligned along the path to be scanned by the reading head shown on the right of the Figure. Alternatively, for each of the number of trains to be set up there may be provided three sectors 34 (Fig. 9), each arranged for pivotal displacement on a shaft 37 into a middle, upper, or lower position, so as to form, in conjunction with the stationary intermediate portions 35, recordings of all the possible impulse trains. Cylinders 31, one for each of the number of impulse trains to be set up, control the sectors 34 by means of notches 32 of three different depths. Specification 850,631 is referred to.
