Abstract

850,588. Switching control for incandescent lamps. NIELSEN CO. Ltd., A. C. Dec. 3, 1956 [Dec. 22, 1955], No. 36895/56. Class 38 (4). An apparatus comprising a light-sensitive member such as a film has the member subjected to the light radiated from an electric lamp, the current flowing through the lamp being alternately switched from a value which is insufficient to cause the lamp radiation to affect the light-sensitive member to a value which causes the lamp to radiate to affect the member. A blue-violet sensitive photographic film 23 on which it is desired to record a succession of discrete marks is subjected to the light radiated from an incandescent lamp 21. The lamp 21 is supplied from an alternating current source 18, 19 by way of a voltage regulator 16 and the primary winding 13 of a transformer 12. An adjustable resistor 32 is provided to adjust the current flowing in the lamp-when a thyratron 25 is non-conductive-to a low value so that the filament of the lamp 21 is only warmed to a degree whereby the light emitted from the lamp is mainly in the " red " sector of the spectrum and consequently does not expose the film 23. When it is desired to expose the film a suitable voltage is fed from the source 43 to the controlgrid 25a of the thyratron 25 whereby to render it conducting such that the impedance of the secondary winding 14 of the transformer 12 is reduced. The secondary impedance reflected in the primary side of the transformer is therefore reduced so that a larger current flows through the lamp 21 so that the light emitted therefrom will expose the film 23. Thus the life of the lamp 21 is lengthened as against continual switching ON and OFF. In other embodiments conduction of the thyratron may be arranged to affect the saturation of a saturable reaction; may be arranged to superimpose a voltage on an existing voltage or may be arranged to operate a relay whereby the energization of the lamp is varied. Specifications 819,524 and 823,361 are referred to.
