Abstract

<PICT:0850520/III/1> A liquid coating layer is applied to the interior surface of an open-ended pipe by inserting into the pipe a unit having at least one partition member and at least one brush or spreader secured to one another in fixed axially spaced relation to provide a chamber or chambers for the coating material, enclosing the unit within the pipe by an end closure member, filling the chamber or chambers with coating material, and hauling the unit through the pipe in such a manner as to impart a rotary motion thereto. As shown, the unit comprises skids 11 and 17, a partition member 1, e.g. of rubber and a set of brushes 5, these members being connected by a drag rod 9 which passes through a central bore in the skid 11 and is adapted to be connected by a socket 15 to a rotatable drag rod or rope. The other end of the rod 9 is connected to a coupling 16 on the skid 17, to which the brush unit 5 is connected through a coupling 18 in such a manner that it can rotate with the rod 9. A filling container 2 is attached to the end of the pipe P, the brushes being positioned therein, and paint introduced through the funnel 23. The unit is then hauled through the pipe, rotary movement being imparted to the brushes by means of the haulage rod. Specifications 655,915, 684,584 and 756,037 are referred to.
