Abstract

850,490. Piston and stuffing-box packing. REGIE NATIONALE DES USINES RENAULT. March 27, 1958 [April 10, 1957], No. 9926/58. Classes 122 (1) and 122 (5). [Also in Group XXVIII] In a pneumatic jack (see Group XXVIII), the piston is formed by a packing 14 held in position by a rib 15 of the rod 7. The packing 14 comprises a sliding-contact sealing-lip 16 and a static sealing lip 17; annular beads 18 on the side of the packing are in sliding contact with the cylinder, and a shock-absorbing bead 19 is provided at the lower end. The packing is such that air pressure applied to the lower side of the piston can leak past the lip 16 and the packing may be provided with perforations 21, formed without removal of material, which allow leakage of. air from above the packing when the lower side is vented to the atmosphere. In a modified form the piston packing comprises two separate packings, facing in opposite directions, each having two lips similar to 16 and 17, and the packing on the side to which air pressure is supplied is provided with perforations similar to 21 to allow flow through these perforations and past the outer lip of the other packing to the opposite side of the piston. A gland packing 6 between the rod 7 and the jack body comprises a pair of inner sealing-lips 8, 9 and a scraper lip 10. This packing has a reinforcing support 11 clamped by a ring 12 formed with a recess accommodating the lips 8, 9, this ring 12 being pressed by the head 3 between which parts a gasket 13 is interposed.
