850,414. Rot-proofing timber. RICHARDSON & STARLING Ltd. April 21, 1959 [April 21, 1958], No. 12577/58. Class 140. Timber components of cooling towers having partial gross soft rot to an average depth of at least <SP>1</SP>/ 32 inch are treated with a preservative solution active against soft rot and Basidiomycete attack, so that the solution is absorbed in the rotted areas and diffuses inwards. The components treated may show a water content of 100% of the oven-dry weight of the wood and this may be reduced to 60% before treating. The preservative may be fixed in the wood by precipitation; a first treatment with a soluble copper salt may be followed by a treatment with sodium chromate or arsenate.
