Abstract

850,045. Pneumatic tyres. GOODYEAR TIRE & RUBBER CO. July 21, 1958 [Nov. 19, 1957], No. 23287/58. Class 144 (2). [Also in Group XXIII] Undesirable matter adhering to the surface of an elastomeric article is removed by blasting the surface with a fine metallic grit. A tubeless tyre has a tread 9, elastomercoated fabric reinforcing plies 10, an air-retaining liner 11 and a layer 12 of liner coating providing a non-sticky surface to prevent adherence of the curing tube used during vulcanization. To remedy defects in the air-retaining liner or to secure balance dough so as to correct unbalance of the tyre, a portion of the liner coating 12 must first be removed. This is done by an air stream containing fine metallic grit fed through flexible pipe 1 to nozzle 2. The grit may be iron, 40-80 grit size, and the air pressure may be 60-90 p.s.i.g. A hood 5 connected to suction line 6 removes abraded material and spent grit, either during or after blasting.
