Wagon handling apparatus comprises in combination, a tippler constructed for tipping wagons thereon, one or more fixed trucks adjacent thereto in register with a track on the tippler for feeding wagons 13 to or from the tippler, rails 14 forming a track at one side of the tippler parallel to the tippler track and the fixed tracks, a carriage 15 movable on the rails and means for moving the carriage on the rails to and from a position at which movement of the carriage along its rail is arrested, the carriage having an arm 19 carrying a buffer, the arm being mounted for movement between an extended position in which the buffer thereon is located to engage a buffer of a wagon positioned on the fixed tracks or on the tippler in its normal (Jowered) position, and a retracted position in which the arm is clear of any wagon on the tracks or on the tippler. The arm 19 may be pivoted on the carriage and operated by means such as a motor driving a pinion 23 engaging a toothed quadrant 24 on the arm, the arm may have an end roller to engage below guides or be pivoted to swing in a horizontal plane or be slidable by rack and pinion. In operation, as the wagon tips, the arm on the carriage rises from the wagon and the carriage moves by an endless cable to the other end of the wagon where the arm lowers to engage a buffer when tipping is completed and propels the wagon from the platform on to aligned tracks. The wagon tips by operating a winch drum 11 the cable from which passes round a cam 8 pivoted at 7 and connected to the platform 1 by links 5, 6 and pivoted arm 12 at each end of the tippler secures the wagon during tipping.
