Abstract

A cement applying apparatus, of the type in which a rod of thermoplastic current is progressively fed into the apparatus in which it is melted at a controlled rate and applied to the work, comprises a stationary unit and a rotary unit arranged to co-operate with the stationary unit and mounted for rotation relative thereto about an axis, the two units being shaped to provide a passage at least partially encircling the axis, part at least of which passage lies along a groove in the rotary unit and encircling the axis, there being an inlet into said passage and an outlet from said passage to which cement is urged when the rotary unit is rotated relative to the stationary unit <PICT:0849652/III/1> <PICT:0849652/III/2> in the operation of the apparatus. In a machine similar to the second illustrative example of the parent Specification there is included a member which pushes the rod of cement into contact with the rotary unit at the beginning of work and withdraws it therefrom at the end of work. As shown, (Fig. 1) a rod R of cement is fed into a bore 254 in block 252. The toothed arcuate member 260 is operated by a treadle which also causes the disc 152 to start rotating. The rod even if it is of soft or limber p material is urged by the member 260 into contact with the rotary unit, and the continued movement of the member brings roller 282 into contact with inclined surface 294 thus disengaging the member from the rod until such time as the treadle is released, when member 260 again engages the rod of cement and partially withdraws it so that the tail portion T is allowed to cool and solidify. The pivoted work-table 44 (Fig. 2) is raised and lowered and the feed rollers 18, 28 for workpieces are started and stopped by the same treadle which operates the member 260. The groove around the rotary unit may be of arcuate or rectangular cross-section; in one embodiment it subtends an angle at the axis of about 270 degrees while in another embodiment two such grooves connected by a passage subtend a total angle of about 540 degrees at the axis.
