Abstract
<PICT:0834567/III/1> <PICT:0834567/III/2> <PICT:0834567/III/3> <PICT:0834567/III/4> A cement applying apparatus comprises a power-driven rotary applying member having a peripheral surface by which cement is applied to the work while the machine is in operation, a member having a passageway therein which opens into a chamber one wall of which is constituted by said pheripheral surface and from which chamber cement is carried by the rotary member and applied to the work, a casing having an inlet passageway into which thermoplastic cement in rod form may be fed, means for heating said casing, and a disc mounted for rotation in the casing, the arrangement being such that as the disc is rotated cement fed into the inlet passageway is melted and fed forward by the disc, passing from said chamber and thence to the rotary applying member. As shown in one embodiment (Figs. 1, 3 and 4) a flexible rod of thermoplastic cement R is urged by rollers 176, 184 into the casing 80, within which rotates the disc 96, the casing being heated by electric heaters 220. The molten plastic is pumped by gears 110, 112 via passages 118, 123 and 56 to the applying member 10, a portion of the periphery of which protrudes through a table T and contacts the underside of workpieces W held against it by the spring finger F. The amount of cement applied can be regulated by the by-pass valve 122, and the thickness of the coating on the applying member can be controlled by the doctor blade 66. In another embodiment (Fig. 9), the cement is fed by rollers 346, 348 to disc 382 and then in molten condition via gear pump 392, 394 and passages 398 and 400 to the applying member 406. A spring-loaded by-pass valve adjustable by screw 434 is associated with the gear pump and operates when more cement is being pumped than is being applied by the member 406. The thickness of the coating on the member 406 can be controlled by the eccentrically-mounted doctor roller 500.
