A device for grinding substantially flat workpieces, for example the slideways of machine tools, so as to provide a curved surface thereon comprises a rectilinearly reciprocating work table for supporting a workpiece to be ground, a grinding wheel rotatably carried by a displaceable support, a reversible electric motor the direction of rotation of which is dependent upon the direction of displacement of the work-table, a cam adapted on operation of said motor to be moved in one direction or the other depending upon the direction of rotation of the latter and follower means adapted to co-operate with said cam and effective to control the displacement of said support, the arrangement being such that on operation of the device the grinding wheel will be caused to form a curved surface on the workpiece. The workpiece 2 on a reciprocating work table 1 is ground by a grinding wheel 18 carried by a support 17 mounted in a bracket 16 by an eccentric shaft 15. An electric motor 6 which reciprocates the work table also drives a generator 7 which supplies a motor 8 driving, through gears 9, 10, 11, 12, a cam 13 followed by a roller 23 on an arm 14 attached to one end of the shaft 15. An eccentric 19 can be operated to hold the roller 23 clear of the cam 13 and simultaneously to render the motor 8 inoperative. In a modification, Fig. 5, the support 17 has a screw 30 engaging a nut 29 which is rotated by the arm 14 having a roller 23 following the cam 13. Setting-up is done by a handwheel 31 on the screw 30. In a further modification, Fig. 4, a reciprocating cam 32 is used, this being reciprocated by the motor 8 through gearing 34 and a screw 33.
