Abstract

849,495. Tunnel kilns. GIBBONS BROS. Ltd. July 31, 1957 [Aug. 1, 1956], No. 23689/56. Class 51 (2). The cooling section of a tunnel kiln for firing ceramics comprises three successive indirectly cooled zones, namely, a rapid cooling zone immediately beyond the firing zone having air chambers 10 and 11 in the side walls and roof respectively, a slower cooling zone with air chambers 28 in the roof, and a final cooling zone with air chambers 31 and 32 in the side wall and roof respectively. The rapid cooling zone has damper-controlled side inlets and roof outlets 13 respectively, and in this zone the tunnel atmosphere is recirculated to give controlled cooling. Longitudinal flues 15 are disposed in the side walls at about the level of the kiln car floors communicating with the tunnel interior by ports 16 and with a fan 19 which recirculates the kiln atmosphere through a duct 17, branch pipes 18 having dampers 22, and forwardly directed nozzles 20. A heater 23 or an air port 24 provided in the recirculation system enable the gases to be kept at about 600‹ C. The recirculation system may extend partially into the next cooling zone in which the roof cooling chamber 28 has an inlet 29 and damper-controlled outlet 30 connected to the main fan. Auxiliary burners 27 in the side walls may be used to maintain the temperature of the lower parts of the kiln cars. The final cooling chambers 31, 32 have inlets 33 and 35 and damper-controlled outlets 36 and 34 respectively connected to the main fan, the zone being divided into separate sections longitudinally and vertically.
