Abstract
849,479. Making electrical components; welding by pressure; stretching. ELECTRIC & MUSICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Feb. 5, 1957 [Feb. 15, 1956], No. 4678/56. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). In securing a thin metal mesh to supporting- means the mesh and means are forced together under such a high pressure that the mesh and means become secured together without using a cement or a high-temperature such as is required for brazing. A silver or gold-plated silver mesh of six hundred bars per inch pitch and thickness of 0.0002 inch and a circular or rectangular copper or copper nickel alloy frame which may be gold- or silver-plated, are pressed together at room temperature under a pressure of 50 tons per square inch for 5-60 seconds between rigid flat plates in a press. A layer of indium may be plated on the frame. The frame should be ground flat where it contacts the mesh or alternatively a thin sheet of elastic material having a smaller Young's Modulus and greater compressive strength than the frame is interposed between the mesh and the plate adjacent thereto. After securing the frame and mesh the gold-plated silver mesh is tautened by heating in air to 300‹ C. as described. in Specification 689,564 or if an unplated mesh is used, by heating to 600-650‹ C. in a reducing atmosphere. According to the Provisional Specification the frame may be of gold-plated silver and the frame and mesh may be of copper or nickel.
