Abstract

849,356. Wheel stops. STRACHAN & HENSHAW Ltd. Feb. 23, 1959 [March 5, 1958], No. 7130/58. Addition to 784,543. Class 104 (2). [Also in Groups XXXII and XXXIV] The device of the parent Specification, for retarding railway vehicles is modified in that the rocker 24 is secured to an inclined (or horizontal) axle 23 instead of to a part-spherical bearing. The axle 23 is mounted in a housing 11, 22 having two projections 14 with a cross-piece 15 shaped to fittingly engage a rail 16-19 so that the housing can be adjusted to firmly seat its lower face on a sleeper 13, the piece 15 and rail being bolted together. A collar 30 on the axle, has an arcuate tooth 40 engaging hardened inserts 42, 43, Fig. 4, in connected pistons 37, 38 projecting into chambers 33, 34, supplied with hydraulic fluid via one-way valves 52, 54 from a chamber 29 filled to level 45 (Fig. 3) from port 44. Rotation of axle 23 by engagement of a wheel 27, 28 with fingers 26 of the rocker 24, moves pistons 37, 38 to force fluid from one chamber 33 or 34 into the other via a passage 55 restricted by insert 56, 57, to retard the vehicle. One-way valves 60, 61 permit flow to chambers 33, 34 respectively, only when a predetermined high pressure is created in chamber 34, 33, e.g. when a fast moving truck hits the device, the additional flow through passages 58 or 59 preventing derailment of the vehicle. A further passage 62 connecting chambers 33, 34, has normally closed valves 63, 64 and grooved rods, 65, 66, which are forced apart to open the valves by a cam 67 on a rod 68, Fig. 3, to permit free flow between the chambers, the rod 68 being controlled by a spring 70 and diaphragm 71 to which is applied fluid pressure from passage 73 or a mechanical force. The valves 63, 64 are closed to hold a vehicle stationary and open to release it. When the device is used purely as a stop and release device passage 55 is omitted or blocked off. Access to adjust valves 52, 54, 60, 61, 63, 64 to a suitable loading pressure, is obtained by removing the plugs 35 from chambers 33, 34.
