[Also in Groups XXXII and XXXIV] For retarding the movement of a wheeled vehicle, a rocking device 27 is positioned in the path of the wheels 39 of the vehicle so as to be rocked by the wheels, energy being dissipated in an hydraulic dashpot device 11. The rocking device 27 is provided with a ball-and-socket bearing 33, 34 with the dashpot device 11 secured to a track rail 14. A toothed portion 30 integral with the ball element 33 extends into a slot 31 of a double-headed piston element 21 acting in a chamber 17. The two cylinders 20 of chamber 17 are interconnected by a duct 23 with an adjustable throttle valve 24 to regulate the flow of hydraulic fluid from one cylinder to the other. The dashpot is filled with hydraulic fluid to the level indicated at 38 and a flexible gaiter 35 prevents the egress of fluid from or the ingress of dirt into the housing. When a vehicle passes, the wheel flange 39 engages the elevated rocker finger 32 and depresses it, causing the rocker device to force piston element 21 in one axial direction along chamber 17, the piston element being retarded in its movement by the hydraulic fluid. When the initially elevated rocker finger 32 has been depressed the other rocker finger 32 will automatically be elevated into the path of the same or a succeeding vehicle wheel, the rocker device 27 being again operated to move piston element 21 in the opposite axial direction for the other piston to be actuated. If the throttle 24 is closed, the rocker device may be locked, in any desired position, to provide a chock for a vehicle wheel.
