Abstract

897,622. Vehicles, preventing theft. DUNCAN, D. S. Oct. 18, 1960 [Oct. 20, 1959], No. 35704/60. Class 79(3). [Also in Group XXXIV] A brake lock device in a hydraulic brake control system of a vehicle for locking the hydraulic brakes of the vehicle in the applied position to prevent its unauthorised movement, comprises a valve 8 which in the locked position shown closes passages 7 between a chamber I connected by a pipe 10 to a master cylinder and a chamber 2 connected by a pipe 11 of different diameter (to make it difficult to fit an elbow between the pipes 10 and 11) connected to the brake cylinders. A spring 13 acting between a flange 12 on the end of a valve stem 9 and a ported valve seat 5 biases the valve to its closed position, while a stiffer spring 14 acting between the flange 12 and an externally threaded sleeve 16 tends to open the valve. Rotation of a key 27 turns the threaded sleeve 16 from the locked position shown and raises it to compress the spring 14, so that the valve 8 is lifted clear of the ported valve seat 5 against the bias of the spring 13, to allow normal operation of the brakes. In the position shown a brake application will cause the valve to be lifted due to the hydraulic pressure in the chamber 1, but once the pressure in the two chambers has equalized the valve is closed by the spring 13 and the brakes held applied. A bleed may be incorporated to release the brake pressure slowly. The threaded sleeve 16 has passages 22 to equalize the pressure at its two ends, a sealing ring 20a preventing escape of the brake fluid. In another embodiment, Fig. 2, the valve is lifted by means of an eccentric rod 42 held between two rotatable studs 40 and 41, the rod acting on a tappet 46. If the lock is removed a spring 52 pushes the studs 40, 41 to the right thereby breaking a seal 43 and causing escape of the brake fluid. The springs 13, 14, Fig. 1, may be formed from a single spring joined to the flange 12 and to a yoke connected to a tappet which slides in the stem 9. In alternative forms, a spring may be situated between the head of valve 8 and the member 5, the valve may be of resilient material and be of frustoconical shape or of a ball valve kind, and in place of the seal 30, Fig. 1, gasket compounds may be used. The lock can be associated with the ignition control switch of a vehicle.
