Abstract

849,208. Nuclear fusion reactors; discharge apparatus. UNITED STATES ATOMIC ENERGY COMMISSION. Sept. 19, 1958 [Oct. 8, 1957], No. 30029/58. Classes 39(1) and 39(4). A thermonuclear reactor comprises a toroidal tube 9 of insulating material, a plurality of coils 12 lying in radial planes surrounding the tonus, conducting annular rings 14 in the torus supported in the plane of each coil, adjacent electrodes being connected to potentials of opposite polarity, means for evacuating the torus, and means for injecting deuterium into the torus. As shown in the Figure, the magnetic field sproduced by the coils and the electric fields between the electrodes are orthogonal at regions such as P, and in these regions plasma will be trapped and collisions between dueterium nuclei will occur with the release of energy and the production of neutrons. There may be 15 coils and electrodes spaced round the torus with a potential of 100 kV between each pair of electrodes, the magnetic field strength being 20,000 gauss. The gas pressure may be 10-100 microns.
