Abstract
849,176. Testing cable insulation. OKONITE CO. Nov. 19, 1958, No. 37234/58. Class 37 The insulation of an electrical cable is continuously tested by passing it through an insulating tube having earthed plugs at each end and a condensable vapour filling the tube so that it condenses on the surface of the insulation to form a slightly conductive film there. A high voltage source is connected between the central conductor of the cable and an electrode in the insulating tube so that the insulation of the cable is subjected to a dielectric stress the ionization characteristics of the insulation being continuously observed as the cable passes through the tube. The Figure shows an apparatus for testing insulation of an electric cable 2 the central conductor of which is grounded at the reel 12 from which it is fed via an insulating tube 4 on to the take-up reel 14 at which also the central conductor is earthed. The insulating tube 4 is provided with earthed stuffing boxes 6 at each end and is filled with a condensable vapour such as wet steam which condenses on the surface of the insulation and is finally collected in a sump near the centre of the tube. Contact is made with the cable at the centre of its passage through the tube 4 by means of an electrode 8 and contact roller 9. High voltage from a transformer 20 is connected between the electrode 8 and the earthed centre conductor of the cable and the ionization characteristics of the insulation are observed by a radio receiver 34 and a recording galvanometer 40 connected to the electrode 8. By adjustment of the voltage from transformer 20 the characteristics of the insulation at varying stress voltages may be found.
