Abstract

848,864. Separating oil particles from air. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. Nov. 13, 1958, No. 36623/58. Class 123(3) [Also in Group XXVI] Oil-laden air, which is slightly above atmospheric pressure in the upper part of an oil tank 56 in a lubrication system for a gas turbine aircraft engine, is vented through a pipe 64 and a port 66 to the forward end 12 of a hollow engine-power shaft 10 which accommodates a baffle-cap 22 for removing, from the vented air, the oil droplets which are returned to the tank 56. The baffle cap 22, fixed within the shaft 10, has a transverse wall 24 and a cylindrical wall 26 having radially inwardly-directed opposed pairs of tubes 28, 30 for delivering vented air, substantially free from oil, to the interior of the shaft 10. The vented air. passing through four parallel tubes 34 fixed by plates 32, 36 in an intermediate shaft section 14, enters a single air tube 44 which extends to the rear of the shaft 10 and has a number of radially outwardly-projecting discharge tubes 50 disposed to the rear of a rear turbine wheel 18. Ports 52 in a hub 54 for the wheel 18 lead the vented air to mix with the stream of exhaust gases from the engine. The lubrication system includes the tank 56 and a pump 62 for supplying oil to a pipe 38 which is arranged centrally within the shaft 10 and has, at spaced intervals, radially directed struts 48 with passages to convey lubricant to the various bearings, not shown. A conduit 58 returns scavenge oil to the tank.
