Abstract
847,907. Heat pumps, refrigerating. A. E. I.-HOTPOINT Ltd., and TAYLOR, H. T. Oct. 31, 1956 [Oct. 31, 1955], No. 31029/55. Class 29 In a heat pump air from a space to be heated is circulated over the condenser through a first duct, while an air stream forming the heat source is circulated through a second duct over the evaporator, means being provided for transmitting a variable amount of heat from the first duct to the second duct upstream of the evaporator. Refrigerant passes from the compressor 10, through condenser 11, accumulator 12, expansion valve 13 and evaporator 16. In parallel with the condenser is a water heating coil 89 which may be used in conjunction with or as an alternative to the condenser 11. A coil 99 heats an airing cupboard. As shown in Fig. 5, fresh air enters the space heater at 27 in quantities determined by valve means 52 and is mixed with air from the heated space entering through grille 44. Valve means 52 consists in a semi-circular plate mounted on a spindle which is rotated by a helical bi-metallic responsive to the temperature of the fresh air thus causing the plate to cover varing areas of the inlet apertures for the fresh and recirculated air to the mixing compartment. A fan 58 impels the mixed air into a chamber from where it enters the first duct 17, flowing over compressor 10, accumulator.. 12, condenser 11 and electric heater 19, and the second duct, passing over an electric heater 21 and evaporator 16 and about a refrigerator, in proportions determined by valve means 62 similar to valve means 52 and mounted on the same spindle. After passing about the refrigerator chamber air in the second duct may be expelled through duct 74 or may be returned by hand valve 79 through duct 80 to the mixing chamber. When space heating is not required refrigerant is caused to flow through the heating coil 89 in water tank 90. An airing cupboard 77 is provided beneath condenser 11 which may additionally be heated by a coil in series with the condenser and heating coil 89. Thermally responsive elements 46, 47 located at the fresh air inlet control thermostats operating the electric heating elements 19 and 21. Second thermostats to prevent overheating have thermally responsive elements 66 and 86 placed near the heating elements. A heat leak may be provided by opening damper 97 when the water or space heating system is out of use for long periods. Spedfication 847,908 is referred to.
