Abstract

847,157. Windscreen wipers. ANDERSON, J. W. Jan. 13, 1958 [March 25, 1957 ; Nov. 14, 1957], No. 1184/58. Class 138(1). A rubber windscreen wiper blade is carried by a flexible support, a spacer being disposed between at least one surface of the support and the blade to keep them out of frictional contact. As shown in Fig. 1 the blade assembly comprises a primary bridge 11, secondary yokes 12 and 13 and a wiping element 30. The primary bridge 11 is attached to the secondary yokes 12 and 13 by means of claws 14 and 15, Fig. 6, which enter apertures 16 and 17 and depress spring 18 until they are able to slide into slots 19 and 20 when spring 18 returns to its original position and secures the claws in the slots. Detachment is possible by depressing buttons 21. The secondary yokes clamp on to the wiping element 30 by means of claws 45 and 46 which engage notches 44 in antifriction members 42 and engage under the resilient members 40, 41, Figs. 3 and 4, these being prevented from sliding out of grooves 34 and 35 by abutments, Fig. 2. A modification, Fig. 7, comprises the use of additional anti-friction members 43 as shown. In these embodiments pressure is applied to the flexor element by the yokes via the rubber above the flexor. In a modification, Figs. 9, 10 and 13, the pressure is applied directly to the flexor element by means of side portions 142 on secondary yoke 133 which bear against the edges of flexor elements 150 and 151, thereby applying pressure to the wiper blade. Claws 140, 141 engage the flexor means 112 in such a way that it can slide longitudinally with respect to the claws. To retain the anti-friction contact members 152, 153 in grooves 125, 126 and beneath backing members 150, 151 without restricting their freedom of relative movement, a pair of retainers 157 are used, Fig. 10. Notches 177 and 178 receive tabs 161, 162 and notches 175, 176 in the corners of members 152, 153 receive ramps 167, 168 and claws 140 on the outer ends of the secondary yokes.
