Abstract
846,782. Paternoster lifts. HALL Ltd., J. & E. Dec. 12, 1958 [Dec. 12, 1957], No. 38657/57. Class 78 (1). In a paternoster lift there are provided on the cages and/or the lift shaft movably mounted members which when contacted by a passenger trying to enter or leave a cage not positioned at a landing stage actuate a switch or other control member to stop the driving motor of the lift. As shown, each cage has a pivoted floor portion 6 from which depends a hinged flap 5, while a flap 13 pivoted to the cage roof extends upwards and overlaps the flap 5 on the next cage. If a passenger wishing to enter a descending cage puts his foot between two cages the flaps 5 and 13 and the floor portion 6 of the respective cages are moved to the dotted line position so that levers 8 linked respectively to the flap 13 and floor portion 6 are pivoted to cause rollers 7 on the ends of levers 8 to engage an endless cable 10 held in tension between a resiliently mounted pulley 11 at the top of the lift and a fixed pulley at the bottom of the lift. As a result the pulley 11 is pulled downwards and operates through an operating lever (Fig. 4a, not shown) a switch to disconnect the driving motor. A spring is provided to return the flap 13, while the flap 5 and floor portion 6 normally return by gravity, but if not fully returned are positively returned at the upper or lower end of the lift by a cam 14 engaging a peg 15 carried by the flap 5. The cam 14 may be resiliently mounted at 17, Fig. 3, so that if the flap 5 jams the cam will swing about a pivot 18 and operate a switch 19 to switch off the driving motor. Each landing stage also has a pivoted portion 3 which pivots upwardly and switches off the driving motor if a passenger tries to step out of an upwardly-moving cage before reaching the landing stage.
