Abstract
846,660. Waveguide switches. SPERRY RAND CORPORATION. Jan. 16, 1959 [April 3, 1958], No. 1730/59. Class 40(8). The gap between the movable parts of a mechanical waveguide switch is bridged by one or more conductors situated in the vicinity of the waveguide channels and arranged with their axes transverse to the direction of movement of the switch parts. The switch shown is of the type in which E-plane waveguide bends 40, 41 arranged within a cylindrical rotor 17 are used to connect selected pairs of terminals 13, 14, 15, 16 arranged in a stator 11. In order to prevent leakage of energy through the gap 12 between the rotor and the stator, conductive members 31, made e.g. of graphite, are arranged in slots 30 and are pressed by springs 33 against the cylindrical face of the rotor. The conductive members 31 extend axially the full length of the rotor 17 and, since the length of the rotor is greater than the broad dimension of channels 40, 41, the conductive members cannot protrude into the channels. The inner ends of the conductors are wedge-shaped and contact complementary wedge-shaped members 32 housed within the slots. The angles of the contacting wedging surfaces are slightly different and this causes the conductors 31 to be forced into contact with the sides of the slots. The conductors are arranged within a small fraction of a wavelength of the orifices of the waveguide channels. In a modification (Fig. 3, not shown), the conductive members are arranged in the rotor. Fig. 2 (not shown) illustrates the mounting of the rotor in ball-bearings arranged within a pair of end caps bolted to the stator 11. The end caps and the spindle of the rotor may be provided with air-tight seals.
