846,546. Cutting apparatus for extension brick machines. BENNETT, C. L. Feb. 22, 1957 [Feb. 27, 1956], No. 6064/56. Class 87 (2). A brick making machine in which lengths are cut from a moving column 1 of clay or other plastic material comprises a carriage 12 reciprocatable along the line of travel of the column and having mounted on it a target 9 movable between an operative position in which it is disposed in the path of the column so that the carriage 12 is moved in one direction at the same speed as the column and an inoperative position in which a length cut from the column can travel past it, a cutter 4 mounted on the carriage and movable through the column, two actuators mounted on the carriage, viz. a target actuator 15 for moving the target between its two positions and a cutter actuator 18 for moving the cutter 4 across the path of the column, and timing means controlling the operations of the two actuators. As soon as a cut is completed, a control device 'B' is operated to cause retraction of the actuator and raise the target 9 leaving a passage beneath it for the further progress of the length severed from the column. The carriage 12 is then returned by spring action to its initial position. The endless belt 7 carrying the cut length of material moves at a speed greater than that of the extruded column 1 thus leaving a gap into which the target 9 is lowered by operation of a control device 'C' when the cut length has progressed to a position beyond the target. The cut length advances until it reaches the target control device 35 when control device 'D' operates the pusher 25 which pushes the cut length sideways past the inclined cutter wires 39 where it is subdivided into brick lengths. Control device 'D' is arranged in association with a control device 'A', which operates the cutter 4, so as to prevent operation of the pusher 25 unless there is sufficient time available for its advance and retraction and to cause the target control device 35 to be raised if the column is not cut through, for example because of a broken cutter.
