Abstract

588,856. Moulding bricks. WHITTAKER & CO., Ltd., C., and WHITTAKER, N. Feb. 10, 1945, No. 3400. [Class 87 (ii)] A scraper. F carried by the reciprocating feed carriage A enters the mould B to a desired depth and on the rearward movement of the carriage removes a layer of material from the top, or from a portion of the top, of the material in the mould. In Fig. 1, the scraper F is carried on arms f fast on a transverse shaft E, on which are also fast arms g having at their ends rollers G running on fixed rails G<1>. As the carriage moves forward the rollers drop on to the surface g<1> lowering the scraper on to the top of the plunger D; when the carriage is fully forward and the plunger D descends, the scraper enters the mould and, on the return of the carriage, removes a top layer of material, being carried out of the mould at the end by the surface g'. The thickness of the layer is controlled by adjusting the screwed rod H, which forms a stop for the arms g<4> on the shaft E. In a modification the scraper is withdrawn from the mould by an electromagnet controlled by a switch operated by the backward movement of the carriage. To remove material corresponding to the recessed panel of a frogged brick, the scraper is made of width equal to the width of the panel and is arranged to enter and leave the mould at positions coinciding with the ends of the panel. For tapered bricks the scraper F, Fig. 5, is mounted on a shaft L working in slots a in the carriage, and having rollers M running on inclined fixed girders M' so that material above the dotted line b is removed. The scraper is pivotally mounted on the shaft and pressed into the vertical position shown by a spring l which yields to allow the scraper to trail over the' surface of the plunger D during the forward movement of the carriage. The table P on to which the compressed blocks Rare ejected may be inclined so that the tops of the blocks are horizontal as they travel along the table. A difference in density between the bricks made in a duplex machine can be remedied by adjusting the scraper on one of the feed carriages.
