Abstract

Oil-soluble copolymers of maleic anhydride and an a ,b -unsaturated carboxylic acid ester are treated with ammonia or a primary or secondary amine at a temperature of at least 100 DEG C. to form amide groups. The preferred copolymers are those with esters of maleic or fumaric acid with C2-C20 alcohols together with, if desired, styrene, alkylated styrene or C2-C12 vinyl esters particularly vinyl acetate, and are prepared in the presence of benzoyl peroxide, tertiary butyl perbenzoate or an arzo catalyst. The copolymer is reacted with ammonia, which may be formed in situ from ammonium carbonate, or a C1-C20 aliphatic amine at 100 DEG C. or more, preferably in the presence of a stripping gas to remove water. The anhydride groups are wholly amided. Specification 807,737 is referred to.ALSO:Lubricating oil compositions contain as detergent an oil-soluble copolymer of maleic anhydride and an a ,b -unsaturated carboxylic acid ester which has been treated with ammonia or a primary or secondary amine at a temperature of at least 100 DEG C. to form amide groups. The oil may be a mineral, animal, vegetable or synthetic oil, or a lubricating fuel oil such as a middle distillate or kerosine. The copolymer may be one with an ester of maleic or fumeric acid and a C2-C20 alcohol, if desired together with styrene, alkylated styrene or a vinyl ester. The amine may be a C1-C20 aliphatic amine. The anhydride groups are wholly amidated. Specification 807,737 is referred to.
