Abstract

846,361. Liquid meters. SCHMITT, R. July 24, 1958 [Aug. 2, 1957], No. 23912/58. Class 69 (2). A liquid meter comprises a piston 7 or vane - dividing measuring chambers 12, 13 which are connected alternately by supply and discharge pipes 16, 17 by a valve 10, 11 controlled by a mechanism 24 rocked in dependence on the movement of the piston, and a stop 26 automatically adjustable in dependence on the difference in pressure in the supply and discharge pipes for limiting the movement of the rocking mechanism. The chambers 12, 13 are alternately connected to the supply pipe 16 by rotation of the valve 10, 11 and ports 14, 15 to impart movement to the piston 7 which is on a rod 8 connected by a bell-crank lever 19, 20 to a link 21, the number of strokes of the piston being transmitted to a counting mechanism 5. Movement of the piston to the right pulls the link 21 downwardly which, by means of a spring 219, rocks the lever 24 secured to a rod 9 connected to the valve 10, 11 from a position abutting a stop 25, which may be adjustable to a position abutting the stop 26 which is in the form of a cone eccentrically mounted on a pin secured to a lever 36. The pressure in the supply pipe 16 is connected by a conduit 33 to one side of a spring-urged piston 29 or diaphragm having a rod 34 connected by a cable 35 to the lever 36. The cylinder 28, in which the piston 29 slides, is provided with slots 38 leading into an annular chamber 31 connected by a conduit 32 with the discharge pipe 17 so that the side of the piston remote from the supply is connected to the discharge pipe. The difference in pressure in the pipes 16, 17, which varies with the flow of liquid through the meter, displaces the piston 29 to adjust the stop 26 and vary the position at which the valve 10, 11 changes over rotation to the position of the piston 7. The slots also permit liquid to flow through the meter in the event of a breakdown in the meter. Chambers formed by covers 4, 6 at the ends of the meter are interconnected by a bore in the piston-rod 8 and filled with the liquid to be measured so that pressure in the meter is in equilibrium.
