Abstract

845,795. Gauging departure from standard form. ABBOTT, M. E. March 17, 1958 [March 25, 1957], No. 8515/58. Class 106 (2). A profile inspecting device of the type having an indicator-actuating tracer 29 and a pilot plane 13 substantially parallel to the surface 30 to be tested has a carrier 24 on which the tracer 29 is mounted, the carrier 24 being slidably engaged with the plane 13 in a manner to preclude any tilting of the carrier and being movable by an actuator 20, the actuator 20 and carrier 24 having an operative connection arranged to allow limited deviation of the actuator 20 from its intended plane of movement without correspondingly moving the carrier 24. Skids 25 on the carrier 24 are held against the plane surface 13 by springs 26, three such skids being provided to prevent tilting of the carrier. The carrier is moved horizontally by a screw-driven actuator 20, in an opening of which it slides loosely. The tracer 29, supported by the carrier 24, contacts the workpiece 30, and tilting of a beam 31 operates an electrical or magnetic indicating means (not shown) to show when inaccuracies in the workpiece 30 are encountered.
