Abstract
845,724. Spinning yarns. SHUFORD MILLS Inc. July 2, 1957, No. 20841/57. Class 120(2). [Also in Group XXIV] A spinning or twisting machine comprises at least one spindle, a ring rail, at least one pair of pulleys having an endless belt trained therearound and mounted one on a main shaft adapted to rotate said spindle and to reciprocate said ring rail and the other on a drive shaft spaced from said main shaft, one of said pulleys being fixed and the other being expansible by fluid pressure to increase its effective diameter, a conduit extending from a source of fluid pressure to said expansible pulley add having a pressure regulator valve interposed therein, and means for progressively opening said valve correspondingly to increase the amount of pressure directed into the expansible pulley with movement of said ring rail in one direction only with each reciprocation thereof, thereby correspondingly to increase the speed of the machine. An electric motor 30 is fixed on a plate 37 slidable horizontally under the influence of a tension spring. On the output shaft 32 is a variable speed pulley assembly 31 the diameter of the pulley being adjusted hydraulically in accordance with the vertical movements of the ring rail 14, to increase the speed of winding as the diameter of yarn wound on the package increases. The ring rail 14 is reciprocated by a lever 21 attached to an oscillating cross arm 20 to which is also attached a crank arm 97 which reciprocates a link 95 to advance a ratchet pawl 93 on a ratchet wheel 90 with each vertical movement of the ring rail 14. The wheel 90 through a spring 91 adjusts a valve 83 to increase the pressure in a conduit 82 and move a movable flange 61 of the pulley assembly 31 towards a fixed flange 57 and thus increase the effective diameter of the pulley. At the end of the winding cycle the pawl 93 is raised and the wheel 90 starts to return the valve 83 to the zero position, and the spring moves the motor 30 to cause the belt 67 to move the flanges 61, 57 apart.
