Abstract

845,475. Sewing, sewing machines. HEDBRANDH, E. A. March 19, 1958 [March 23, 1957; March 8, 1958]. No. 8830/58. Class 112 Apparatus for forming a seam of running stitches in the superposed fabric edges at the back of a necktie comprises a pair of jaws provided with staggered projections the length of which is comparatively short compared with that of the gaps therebetween, said projections being adapted to form in said edges corrugations which intersect a straight line, a spring member having two parallel rows of staggered tongues which are adapted substantially to fill up said gaps so as to hold said corrugations apart, and a needle of sufficient length. when passed along said line, to pierce all the corrugations. The needle inserts an elastic thread which is extended and cut off short before being knotted at its ends. In Fig. 4 the jaws are constituted by the sides 8, 9 of springy angle member 4, and V-shaped projections 10, 11 provided at the edges of the latter are formed with respective notches 12, 13 for passage of the needle. A spacing member 5 is formed with two rows of staggered tongues 14, 15 adapted to lie between the projections. A table 6 is formed with a necktie-shaped depression 19. Ribs 39 disposed at the sides of the latter enclose a tie blank-shaped space. A blank is positioned between mid ribs and a tie-shaped template 7 is lowered into the depression 19. Member 4 is detachably connected to the template, and is also detachably connected to a bar 33 adapted to be raised and lowered by articulated cones 34, 35. Member 5 is carried by a swinging arm 26 and is adapted, after a lining 20 has been laid over the template and side 8, to be engaged with the tie blank for folding the sides 1, 2 of the latter inwardly. A bar 21 is then lowered, by means of a handle 31 acting through gears 29 and racks 28, to press the intermeshed parts together, and a latched needle having an elongated shank is projected through the aligned notches 11, 12 by means of opposed rollers bearing on said shank. A thread is then attached to the needle hook and the needle is withdrawn to carry the thread through the corrugations. Member 4 and the template are finally withdrawn endways. The presser bar 21, which is reversible, is formed with a steam channel, whereby the bar may be used to iron the seam. In a modification, Figs. 13, 15, the jaws are constituted by a template 52 and presser bar 56. The projections are constituted by balls 54, 58 located in recesses formed in the respective jaws and spring-biased outwardly. A spring member 60, provided with staggered tongues 61, 62 which are formed with needle-passing grooves 70, is fixed to a rod 63 slidably mounted in the presser bar so as normally to project below the latter, a flange 66 on rod 63 being biased by a spring 65 to engage a stop on the bar. The latter is swingably mounted to enable member to fold the sides 1, 2 inwardly, side 2 being also folded over a withdrawable member 67. Bar 56 is lowered to press the intermeshed parts together, and the needle, when passed along the aligned grooves 70 presses the balls into their recesses whilst it penetrates the corrugations formed by said balls.
