Abstract
845,149. Capacitors. LONDON ELECTRICAL MANUFACTURING CO. Ltd. April 23, 1959 [April 23, 1958], No. 12895/58. Class 37. A capacitor is formed by cutting a section of a tube having helically wound alternate dielectric and metallic layers also to cause the layers to adhere to each other and to the tube walls. The metallic layers are either foil tapes or metallized directly upon the dielectric tapes of e.g. orientated polystyrene. A machine to make capacitors of the kind described, in a continuous process, comprises a rotatable screw-threaded mandrel coupled to a shaft 12, Fig. 1, upon which the dielectric tapes 15, 16, 17, and metal tapes 18, 19 are wound. The tape reels are mounted and longitudinally displaced on a structure 20 which rotates about the axis of the shaft 12, forming a helical winding. Two wheels 21, 22 whose edges press against the wound tube prevent its rotation, whereby it moves along the mandrel, and passes through a heat treating oven 23, shrinking the polystyrene tapes and forming a solid shrunk rod. This is parted off by a slitting wheel 25, while simultaneously a grinding wheel 27, grinds the previously cut end to adjust the capacitance of the product. Terminals are spot welded to the metal tapes as they are drawn towards the mandrel, by spot welding wires thereto. The automatic spot welders 29, 30 are fed with wire by reels 35, 36.
