Abstract

1339259 Insulators BUSHING CO Ltd 6 Jan 1971 [7 Oct 1969] 49263/69 Heading H2C [Also in Divisions D1-D2] A wound electrical insulator is made by winding two side-by-side sheets 11, 12 on to a rotating former 13, the sheets being arranged in overlapping relationship as at 15, 16. A knife 17 cuts the overlapping areas diagonally as at 20 during the wind-up and the surplus material 21, 22 is removed. The result is an oblique buttjoint that is of helical spiral shape in the finished insulator. The above process may be repeated with further sheets to increase the diameter of the insulator. A single sheet may be subsequently wound over the butt-joint area. Electrically conducting inserts may be placed between the turns at selected radial intervals during the winding process. Fig. 6 (not shown) shows how the two overlapping sheets 11, 12 are wound on to a rotating mandrel whilst the knife 17 is traversed by screw thread means, the surplus cut off material (57, 58) being taken up by rollers (59, 60).
