Abstract
844,974. Making flexible tubes. HOOVER Ltd. Dec. 17, 1957 [Dec. 21, 1956 (2)] No. 39221/57. Class 87(2). [Also in Group XXVIII] A flexible and extensible hose is made by passing a steel coil 20 the turns of which are slightly apart through an extruding head 35 in which a thin elastomeric tube 21 made e.g. of polyvinyl chloride is extruded over the coil. The coil passes freely through and is centred by a guide 50 to an extrusion orifice 51 having a lateral opening 52 in its wall which receives a strip electrical conductor 59 from a spool 65. The strip is fed through the orifice 51 whilst hot synthetic plastic material is also fed about the turns of the coil so that on emergence a tube of material is formed enveloping conductor and coil. A fan maintains a suction in the head 35 so that the extruded tube necks down against the coil 20 so that the wall of the tube is drawn inwards together with the conductor between the turns of the coil. The complete hose then passes through rollers (not shown), which freely allow the coil to longitudinally contract and form deep corrugations in the tube, which sets to this form.
