D., DE ROTHSCHILD, E, R, A., and ROTHSCHILD CONTINUATION Ltd., [trading as ROTHSCHILD & SONS, N. M]. May 22, 1958 [Feb. 25, 1957], No. 6301/57. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). In a method of making axially slotted tubes for lip-stick holders of the type having a cup movable axially in a tubular casing so as to be projected or retracted as required, a sheetmetal blank of a length corresponding to the length of the tube and a width over at least part of the length corresponding to the circumference of the tube less the width of the required axial slot is rolled or otherwise formed about a mandrel to form a tube. Shaped blanks 15, Fig. 4, are punched from steel strip and are then formed with stiffening ribs 7, 8 prior to pressing or rolling to form slotted tubes 1, Fig. 8. A blank 15 may be pressed about a mandrel 16, Fig. 6, first by jaws 17, 23, then by jaws 19, 20 and finally again by jaws 17, 23. Alternatively a blank 15 may be fed from a guide 25, Fig. 7, to be rolled about a mandrel 26 by rolls 27, 28, which are recessed to receive the ribs 7, 8. The maximum width c of the blank is equal to the circumference of the required tube, the remaining widths a and b being such as to produce an axial slot 3 leading to a narrow axial slot 3<SP>1</SP> at the upper end of the tube. The lower end of the tube is closed by a washer and a cup 29 pressed over the rib 8 and securing a helically-slotted tube 9 lying externally of the tube 1 between the ribs 7 and 8. Fig. 1. A lip-stick cup 5 located inside the tube 1 carries a pin 4 which projects into slots 3 and 10. A further tube 11 encloses tubes 1 and 9 and is in frictional engagement with the latter so that rotation of a knob 2, formed by the end cup 29 relative to the tubes 11 and 9 causes axial movement of the cup 5.
