Abstract
844,413. Flexible hoses. HOOVER Ltd. Dec. 17, 1957 [Dec. 21, 1956(2)], No. 39218/57. Class 99(2). In a flexible and extensible hose 10 comprising a tube 21 of elastomeric material such as a polyvinyl chloride formed with inwardly and outwardly opening helical corrugations 22, 23, and a resilient, helical, reinforcing coil 20 constituting a tension spring and contained within one of the corrugations, there are two electrical conductors 25, 26 insulated from one another and each extending from end-to-end of the hose. The conductors are incorporated in or constitute the reinforcing coil so as not to interfere with the extensibility or flexibility of the hose. As shown in Fig. 2, the conductors 25, 26 comprise high-tensile, steel wires clad with copper or aluminium spaced apart radially or axially and embedded in a sheath 27 of polyvinyl-chloride ; alternatively, one wire is of copper having a cross-section smaller than that of the steel wire. In modifications, the reinforcing coil comprises (a) a single spring steel wire, sheathed with polyvinyl-chloride, and a crescent-shaped coating of aluminium is applied by spraying to the sheath of the wire to form a further conductor, (b) a steel wire 45, Fig. 5, and wrapped therearound a laminate 46 formed by a strip 48 of copper encased in polyvinyl-chloride 49 and an extruded sheath 47, and (c) an inner, steel wire wrapped with copper, a sheath of polyvinylchloride, a second wrapping of copper and a second sheath of polyvinyl-chloride ; the latter sheath may be omitted. In further modifications, the reinforcing coil consists of (a) a spring steel wire 71, Fig. 8, and a wrapped laminate formed by a strip 73 of aluminium sandwiched between strips 74, 75 of polyvinylchloride, the space between the exposed edges of the strip 73 being located on the outside of the convolutions of the coil so as to be covered by the tube 21, (b) a steel wire sheathed with polyvinyl-chloride and a wrapped laminate of aluminium or copper, bonded to a strip of polyvinyl-chloride, the latter being disposed outwardly of the coil ; alternatively, the steel wire sheath is omitted, and the laminate is wrapped about the wire with the conducting strip disposed outwardly and, if required, sheathed with insulating material, (c) a laminate 92, Fig. 13, consisting of a pressure-sensitive adhesive 94 on a fabric backing 95 of paper and a strip 96 of aluminium, copper or silver, wrapped over a steel wire 91, and an extruded outer sheath of polyvinyl-chloride, and (d) laminates wrapped successively about a wire to provide three electric conductors. Specifications 784,060, 800,371 and 816,160 are referred to.
