Abstract

844,248. Purifying gases. GAS COUNCIL. Oct. 7, 1957 [Oct. 9, 1956], No. 30803/56. Class 55 (2). In a process for removing H 2 S from fuel gases the gas is contacted with a reagent consisting of a suspension or solution of a copper compound or compounds in a hydroxide, carbonate or bi-carbonate of an alkali metal. The process may be effected in a single washing stage and a portion of the reagent continuously withdrawn and regenerated by filtering off the copper sulphide and contacting the resultant clear liquor with copper hydroxide to replenish its content of copper and again filtered before being returned to the washing stage. In an example the reagent contained in aqueous solution 40 p.p.m. of copper by weight and soda as carbonate and bi-carbonate equivalent to 4% sodium carbonate by weight and a gas containing 10 p.p.m. by volume in a single stage washing had its H 2 S content reduced to 0.1 p.p.m.
