Abstract

844,196. Delivering measured quantities of granular materials. SILVER, S. M. Jan. 17, 1958 [Jan. 22, 1957], No. 1723/58. Class 106(5) [Also in Group XVII] A carton from which measured quantities of granular or powdered materials can be dispensed is made from a single cardboard blank (see Group XVII) and comprises an exit shoot 54 extending part of the height of the container, a metering chamber 55 immediately below the shoot and of greater cross-section and capacity than the shoot and a supply chamber 56 which is of greater capacity than the metering chamber and has a flap bottom 43 forming a one-way valve between the supply chamber and the main body 59 of the container. On tipping the container, the contents of the measuring chamber are discharged through the shoot and as the container passes the horizontal position, the flap 43 moves against a bent-out stop 70 to allow the supply chamber to be filled. When the container is returned to the upright position, the flap closes and the measuring chamber is refilled from the supply chamber 56 through the opening 58 provided because of the greater cross-section of the measuring chamber compared with the shoot. When the container is initially filled with material, from the bottom, the shoot supply chamber and measuring chamber are substantially filled and, to allow the excess in the shoot to return gradually to the main body 59, the flap 43 is not a close fit in the chamber 56. A tearoff flap and knockout piece normally close the shoot and a several radiating scored or cut lines 75 are provided on the flap 43 so that the edge of the stop 70 may engage in one of them and prevent the stop from being folded back by the valve.
