A tyre mounting tool, for use in fitting a beaded tyre and a diaphragm with channelled edges for receiving the beads on to a wheel rim on a tyre mounting machine, consists of an arm extending radially outwardly towards the tyre periphery with means for temporarily securing the channelled edges to the beads rotatably mounted on the end of the arm adjacent to the tyre. In the embodiments the temperary securing means takes the form of a toothed wheel. In one form (Fig. 1) this comprises peg-type teeth 23 depending at equal intervals from the periphery of a circular plate 18 rotatably mounted on the arm 11 with provision for limited adjustment of its position along the arm. The tool 10, comprising the arm and the toothed wheel, is mounted as shown on a spindle 9 in alignment with the wheel rim axis, the rim and spindle being relatively rotatable, e.g. by a power drive unit 8. Another form of tool (Fig. 4), in which the arm 31 is manually rotatable about the central spindle as fulcrum and the toothed wheel 35 is of spur gear form, the arm incorporates an offset portion 33 terminating in a hooked end 40 which engages the rim and to which is attached a guide roller 42 to run on the tyre side wall. In using either type of tool the wheel rim is positioned on a tyre mounting machine and a portion of the tyre bead and diaphragm edge is buttoned into the drop centre of the rim, as shown in Fig. 1. The unmounted portion is then progressively forced into the rim by rotation of the latter, or of the central spindle, or of the drum about the spindle, the teeth of the toothed wheel, as the latter rotates on its own axis, holding the diaphragm and bead in contact at spaced points in advance of the portion being forced into the rim.
