Abstract

A dull or matt surface is formed on polyethylene terephthalate film by contacting a surface of the film with an aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide, or, preferably, potassium hydroxide, until at least the surface lustre of the film has been removed. The film may be immersed in a 50% by weight aqueous solution of potassium hydroxide at 120-130 DEG C. for one minute. The concentration of the potassium hydroxide solution may be 30-60% by weight and the treating temperature 90-130 DEG C. The film may be treated on one or both surfaces, one surface, in the former case, being protected by causing it to adhere temporarily to a suitable supporting surface. In an example, a piece of crystallised polyethylene terephthalate film 0,005 inch thick is immersed for 1 minute in a 50% by weight solution of potassium hydroxide in water at 120 DEG C., the layer of potassium terephthalate thereby formed on the surface of the film is washed off with water, and the film is finally washed with acetone and dried. The treated films may be used for writing on with pencil or ink, as tracing cloth, as a protective coating when laminated to other materials and for improving the bond strength of laminates that include a polyethylene terephthalate film layer.
