A motor-driven can-opener comprises a motor-driven traction-wheel 10 and a cutting- blade 14 which can be brought into engagement with the can while it is rotated by the wheel, first to puncture and then to cut the can. The device comprises a stand 4 housing an electric motor, the motor being started by the depression of a lever 34 which closes a switch 50. The arm 34 is pivoted at 36 on a circular plate 12 which is pivoted on the housing 4 at 16, limited lost-motion between the arm 34 and plate 12 being permitted by a pin-and-slot connection 40. The traction-wheel is rotatable about a fixed stub-shaft 82 which projects through an arcuate slot 20 in the plate 12, the movement of which is limited by a parallel slot 22 and pin 24. The knife 14 is rigidly secured to the plate 12. Depression of the arm 34 causes the plate 12 to swing about its pivot 16 so that the blade enters the can which is simultaneously rotated by the wheel 10. Springs 64 act on the lever 34 in its limit-positions.
