843,483. Shaping plastic porous materials. AGRICOLA REG TRUST. Dec. 3, 1956 [Sept. 3, 1955], No. 12817/55. Class 87(2). [Also in Group VIII] A strip 1 of expanded, or porous, thermoplastic material is drawn by rollers 8, 9 along a table 2 past an electrically heated wire 3 and is thus divided into pieces 4, 5 which are separated by being drawn over a wedge-shaped member 6, through which coolant may be circulated at 7. The wire may be straight and disposed to divide the strip from side to side or corner to corner, or of any regular or irregular shape desired, e.g. Figs. 6 and 7. The wire may be arranged to shape the surface, as of a picture rail. The heated wire may be applied to material rotating on a turntable. A shaped strip or ring may be used instead of wire. The shape of the cutter may be changed during the process, or, with the turntable, the axis may be altered to result in more complex shapes. A heated wire, blade or other tool may be embodied in a hand tool. The temperature may be adjusted to seal off the pores of the material or to leave them open. Pillows, mattresses, seat squabs and upholstery may be shaped from expanded plastic material by the invention.
